New Advanced Materials Commercialization Center for Coating

The Advanced Materials Commercialization Center (AMCC) is a joint venture between
Rhodes State College and American Trim LLC, whose primary purpose is

to commercialize near-term vacuum metallization processes as alternatives to aqueous chrome plating that are both environmentally friendly and cost competitive.

The primary technology of the AMCC is its physical vapor deposition (PVD) chamber. It is one of the largest in the world and allows testing of life-sized parts with the efficiency and accuracy of a lab environment. Along with its PVD chamber, the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for complete vertical integration of lab work. Testing pretreat, primer, and topcoat combinations on ferrous, non-ferrous, and temperature-sensitive substrate, such as polymers, can be realized.

With the award of an additional Wright Projects grant, the AMCC is looking to expand its scope to incorporate advanced coatings in the form of both analog and digital dispensing, application, and cure. The new facility will be called the Materials Deposition Center (MDC) and will be located tangent to the AMCC. This state-of-the-art facility will utilize both modular and multi-directional equipment and allow further proofing of various curing technologies, including: ultra-violet and infra-red, as well as conventional heat cure.

In addition to the potential commercialization through research and development, both centers will promote a shared workforce and economic development, with on-site education, testing, and instruction in both classroom and lab environments.
