Echo "Makes Waves" In Hot Dip Galvanizing
Brescia, Northern Italy — Everyone knows the benefit of hot dip galvanizing for corrosion protection. Today iron, steel and other metallic surfaces bonded with layers of zinc can last a lifetime. Here's what one company is doing to revolutionize the business, anyway.
It is kettle mapping. And this fast, proven, easy-to-use technology is called K-I-D (Kettle Inspection Device).
Thanks to a collaborative effort with The Industrial Materials Institute of the National Research Council of Canada, Zinco has patented a diagnostic tool that combines ultrasonics with special interpretive software to reveal wall thickness of a kettle directly through molten zinc.
"It is non-invasive, production-friendly and measurable within one millimeter," says Mario Ubiali, CEO. "By sending a signal through the kettle wall, we can record its echo and spot erosion before it takes on a more serious nature."
Already, the technology is gaining acceptance throughout the world — Italy, Greece, France, U.K., Canada and the U.S. That's good news for hot dip galvanizing companies with aging or poorly managed kettles experiencing signs of wear or in need of extended service life.
Zinco are the experts. They understand the influence of furnaces, maintenance, production volumes, and the use of alloys and additives. Let them help you optimize your steel design for galvanizing, too.
